In this weeks newsletter we focused on only 3 articles that we found interesting.
1. Environmental Impact Assessment: Will vertical farms upend conventional agriculture?
In a country that has limited agricultural land and commonly endures floods, droughts and typhoons, controlled-environment agriculture may be an ideal alternative to traditional farming.
Vertical farms are almost certainly a good thing. But even in crowded and industrialised Taiwan, conventional agriculture isn’t going away. The rise of CEA shouldn’t distract farmers or consumers from understanding and managing the ecological impacts of rice paddies, fruit orchards and chicken farms.
Question: How does the energy consumption & costs are taken into account?

2. Sweden: Opening of new in-store vertical farm at ICA Maxi
“There are still many vertical farms that claim to produce sustainable, located close to the consumer, but they don’t mention the last mile. If logistics are needed to get the product to the consumer, they can still make a much bigger difference. That’s why we think this hyper-local model really makes an impact in the supply chain.
Question: How big is the difference in environmental impact between a farm in store vs near the distribution centre in clear 100% integrated metrics?

3. The State of Indoor Farming (by Artemis)
The purpose of this report is to look at where the indoor farming industry is today as well as where we think it is going in the near future.
As a point of comparison for the yields above, a small number of outdoor growers also took this survey, and their average yield was 0.77 pounds per square foot.
Question: Knowing vertical farms keep most of their yield data secret, how could this industry share more data to grow the industry faster & more effective?
